The NYC/CUNY Citizenship Corps is an initiative of the CUNY Citizenship and Immigration Project in conjunction with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Immigration Affairs and the Department of Youth and Community Development. It was created to recruit and train volunteers to provide free naturalization application assistance at events held throughout New York City. The Citizenship Corps and its volunteers play a key role in our helping over 5000 immigrants each year.

Description and/or History:
The mission of the CUNY Citizenship and Immigration Project is to provide free, high quality, and confidential citizenship and immigration law services to help immigrants on their path to U.S. citizenship. To achieve this goal, our immigration attorneys and paralegals offer one-on-one consultations to assess participants’ eligibility for legal benefits and advise them on the most viable options available. In addition, we coordinate community, educational, and volunteer initiatives to help us further our mission.
The City University of New York established the Citizenship and Immigration Project in 1997 to address the growing need for immigration services of foreign-born students, faculty, and staff. Following a tradition of community service, CUNY expanded the Project’s services to serve all New Yorkers. Currently the Project has eight Immigration Centers located throughout New York.
