Organization Details:

We are a coastal environmental organization. Each year in Mid September (this year September 25, 2010) we gather volunteers from local communities throughout New York City and State to participate in the September International Coastal Cleanup to clean up beaches, rivers, lakes ponds or any waterway. The volunteers pick up litter, etc., document the trash and submit to a national data base by the Ocean Conservancy. The September Cleanup has grown from 100 volunteers in 1985 to 10,000 volunteers in 2009.

Description and/or History:
Our other programs include advocating for laws to protect our coasts; sponsoring inexpensive or free nature trips and hikes, educating youngsters on nature and wildlife. The Jamaica Bay Guardian monitors water quality and wildlife, educates boaters and fishermen and works to reverse marsh loss in Jamaica Bay.
The Northeast Chapter was initiated in 1981 by concerned citizens on the state of our coastline and waterways. Our executive office in New Jersey was founded in the 1970's to protect our Atlantic coast and waterways.

Directions:

Direction not really needed. Volunteers go to areas in their neighborhood or close to their neighborhood. Each clean-up site has a beach captain who coordinates activities, volunteers and documentation of trash.
