Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has been a leading voice for arts and culture Downtown and throughout New York City for over 35 years, producing cultural events and promoting the arts through grants, services, advocacy, and cultural development programs. Description and/or History:
PROGRAMSProgramming at the Council stokes the cultural life of the city with art, ideas and imagination. We encourage art where it’s least expected, stimulate conversation around the ideas of the moment, and continually burnish and tarnish the links between culture and capital from our nook in New York’s Financial District. We curate, produce and commission a wide-ranging array of art installations, performances, and symposia -- from the wildly popular summer series, Sitelines, to the hard-hitting Cities, Art and Recovery summits, from the nomadic lecture series, Access Restricted, to the downloadable Public Art Walking Tours.
ARTIST RESIDENCIESOur flagship residency program, Workspace, provides artists and writers working in diverse mediums and genres with free studio workspace for nine months, a modest one-time stipend, as well as access to a community of peers, professional development services, and exposure to new audiences through online and public programs.Swing Space is a project-based space-granting program that matches artists and arts organizations with temporarily vacant commercial space downtown. Development, presentation and office space for visual and performing artists and arts groups are typically awarded for one to four months and are accompanied by a modest project stipend.
GRANTS & SERVICESThe Council offers three community arts grant programs to artists and organizations throughout the borough of Manhattan: Creative Curricula, Fund for Creative Communities, and Manhattan Community Arts Fund (MCAF). We administer these programs in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and New York City's Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), with additional support from various private foundations. The department also delivers workshops for LMCC’s constituency through its professional development seminars. Past and present series have included Training, Networking and Talks (TNT), Basic Finance for Artists (BFA) as well as other workshops and initiatives with partner organizations.
DEVELOPMENTDevelopment handles fundraising for the Council, raising funds through Foundations, Corporations, Individual and Government grants, and contributions. In addition, the department implements the Fall Benefit and Spring Benefit, while promoting the Council’s activities to the general public.
MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONSThe department handles all of LMCC's printed materials, the website, and is involved in all aspects of the organization, including programs, events and exhibitions.
FINANCE & ADMINISTRATIONThe Finance and Admin team handles accounting and budgeting at the Council as well as the administrative functions, including Human Resources, Operations and Office Management.Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) has been the leading arts presenter, advocate, and service provider to artists and arts groups throughout Lower Manhattan for over 35 years. LMCC was founded by David Rockefeller and other business and civic leaders in 1973 and was housed in the World Trader Center until 9/11. The Council, which was created shortly after the Twin Towers were built, was established to humanize the architecture of the World Trade Center Plaza. LMCC grew as downtown grew and today we are Manhattan’s largest and farthest-reaching arts council, bringing diverse cultural experiences to new audiences in unexpected ways and serving as a gateway to culture, information, and resources across the entire borough. “Art Happens Here” is our motto, and we are deeply committed to the essential relationship between art, culture, and the quality of life.
