Organization Details:
WNET.ORG is a pioneering public media institution universally recognized for the intelligence, integrity, innovation, and inspiration of its programs and initiatives. The parent of THIRTEEN, WLIW21 and Creative News Group, which produce acclaimed content for broadcast television and the Web, WNET.ORG serves its community with unique programming and educational projects through an array of channels. In all that it does, WNET.ORG pursues a single, overarching goal – to deliver media experiences of lasting significance for New York, America and the world.
Description and/or History:
WNET.ORG is the premier public media provider of the New York City metropolitan area and parent company of public television stations THIRTEEN and WLIW21. WNET.ORG also hosts the digital services THIRTEEN HD, KidsTHIRTEEN, WLIW Create, WLIW World, THIRTEEN on Demand, THIRTEEN Kids on Demand, and V-me; as well as an ever-expanding range of websites, including thirteen.org, wliw21.org, and Thirteen EdOnline.
The WNET.ORG family of companies is a major producer of broadcast and online media for local, national and international audiences, creating award-winning content in the areas of arts and culture, news and public affairs, science and natural history, documentaries, and children’s programming.
WNET.ORG also produces the annual Celebration of Teaching and Learning, and provides innovative educational outreach at both the local and national levels.
Thirteen/WNET began broadcasting in September, 1962. Many of our volunteers began their "careers" at Thirteen when our auction was a major source of fundraising. Although we no longer do the auction, we still enjoy the support of volunteers who have been with us for more than 30 years. Through the years, our volunteers have been an integral part of the station, providing administrative, customer service and educational outreach support.
