]Brooklyn Rescue Mission Inc. operates food justice programs for the poor, hungry and homeless families in need of emergency food in Central Brooklyn. Our organization is working to reduce hunger and poverty in poor, hungry and homeless families in Central Brooklyn caused by low income, low wages, joblessness and a need for improved education amongst our pantry guests.
Description and/or History:
As a part of our mission to provide equal access to healthy food for Central Brooklyn residents, in May 2004 the Brooklyn Rescue Mission, inc. founded the Bed-Stuy Farm program. This program along with our Growing Success youth farming education program and the Neighborhood Environmental Internship Program for college students has grown and distributed a 3 year total of 7000 lbs of fresh produce free of charge to the neediest members of the community.
Since 2002, it has been our mission is to provide fresh healthy emergency food to pantry guests in addition to social services, referral services, youth services and compassionate care services for those at risk of hunger in our community. We distribute food baskets to 200 needy and hungry families in the community two days a week without appointments and choice pantry by appointment five days a week for a total average of 4000 individuals. We have a senior pantry program day where senior citizens and/or their home attendants can receive pantry bags with food that meet the special dietary needs of senior citizens, at this time we have 250 seniors registered and participating in the program.
