]The mission of the Hyde Leadership Charter School (Hyde-Bronx) is to develop the deeper character and unique potential of each student. Using the Hyde approach for family-based character education, Hyde-Bronx unites parents, teachers and students in helping each student achieve his or her best.
Description and/or History:
Hyde Leadership Charter School (Hyde-Bronx), located in the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx, opened its doors to Kindergartners and 6th graders in 2006 and, since then, has added two grades every year. By 2012, Hyde-Bronx will serve grades K-12.
We are unique vs. other NYC charter schools both in terms of our focus on parent involvement and our belief that character building is an essential part of what a school needs to teach in order to help students become responsible, contributing and fulfilled adults.
Hyde-Bronx emphasizes the critical success factor --the family. Our family-based character education program doesn't just engage the student, it engages the whole family. We strongly believe that parents/guardians are the primary teachers and home is the primary classroom. This unique approach provides an opportunity for the entire family to participate and gain individual and collective strength as well as allowing teachers to partner with students' families.
We believe that rigorous learning attitudes, leadership skills and a social conscience lay the foundation for each student's success in school and preparation for life, and have found that character excellence provides a strong foundation and means for achieving academic excellence.
Proof that this approach has been working is the dramatic leaps in learning by our students. Our 7th grade English Language Arts scores went from 38% proficiency in 07-08 to 75% proficiency in 08-09, and our 8th grade math scores went from 83% proficiency in 07-08 to 86% in 08-09. These impressive improvements resulted in Hyde-Bronx receiving an "A" in Student Progress in English and Math from the NYC Department of Education.
