MillionTreesNYC is a Citywide, public-private initiative with an ambitious goal: to plant and care for one million new trees across New York City's five boroughs over the next decade.

Description and/or History:
MillionTreesNYC is a partnership between Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC initiative, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and New York Restoration Project (NYRP), as well as community, non-profit, government, and corporate partners throughout the city.
To address the needs of New York City’s growing population, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Earth Day 2007 that community greening and urban tree planting would be a major priority of PlaNYC – the city’s long-term sustainability initiative. Recognizing the benefits trees provide New York City’s residents, neighborhoods, and environment, PlaNYC established the ambitious goal of planting one million new trees throughout the city’s five boroughs over the next decade. In an effort to get every New Yorker involved in this momentous tree planting effort, MillionTreesNYC was launched by Mayor Bloomberg and Bette Midler on October 9, 2007.

Thus far almost 300,000 trees have been planted. As we continue to increase the number of trees throughout the city, MillionTreesNYC also looks to volunteers to maintain these trees and keep them healthy green and growing. Volunteers can be a part of this initiative by joining the MillionTreesNYC Stewardship Corps and taking responsibility for specific trees in their neighborhoods. The Stewardship Corps offers free tree care workshops to equip New Yorkers for this task.
