[View Volunteer Opportunities
]Our organization is Christian based in Astoria and our unchanging vision is to work alongside of the local NYC churches to assist them according to their needs. In addition to our main ministry, we have a food pantry.
Description and/or History:
we serve from 130 to 173 people in our community needed food each Friday from 10-12. Our focus for this community service is not only to give food out but to build relationships with those who come every week. While we are receiving grant support for food, we are in need of more funds as the numbers of people who must rely on our help is steadily on the increase while funding is going down substantially. We presently have around 30 volunteers who each week come to help serve our community much needed food.
The New York School of Urban Ministry began in 1984 by a minister of a bible school in upstate NY who felt that we ought to stand beside the local churches in the city of New York and to be an encouragement to them. While we are not a regular school as one would suppose from its name, we have churches from all over the U.S.A who come to us on a "mission trip" from their church. while here, we take them all over the city to various churches who would invite us to come and be apart of their ministry needs.

Overall Experience

Great volunteer opportunity

I have had a wonderful time volunteering for the New York School of Urban Ministry so far. Hearing the people express their gratitude to me and the organization when i hand out bags of food to them makes me feel really good about myself and helping others. I would say i gained communication skills when i interact with the the other volunteers and the people who come to get the food. This is a great organization and a great volunteer opportunity!
