Reach Out And Read Of Lutheran Medical Centers
Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national, non-profit organization that promotes early literacy by making books a routine part of pediatric care.
Description and/or History:
Volunteer readers in ROR programs transform pediatric waiting rooms into literacy-rich areas for children and parents, and help families learn the joys and techniques of reading aloud. Volunteers read to children, modeling book-sharing techniques for parents and showing them by example that reading aloud is fun for the whole family. Volunteers come from all walks of life but have two important traits in common: a love of books and stories, and a genuine interest in helping children. We are looking for energetic volunteers who would like to serve as story-time readers at one of the five Lutheran Family Health Centers in southwest Brooklyn:
- Lutheran Medical Center (55th St. at 2nd Ave.)
- Family Physician Center (6th Ave. at 57th St.)
- Park Ridge Family Health Center (4th Ave. at 64th St.)
- Park Slope Family Health Center (13th St. at 4th Ave.)
- Caribbean American Family Health Center (3414 Church Ave. in Flatbush)
Most of our remaining shifts are between 10 and 5 on weekdays, although we do have a limited number of openings on Saturdays and weekday evenings. Orientation and training sessions are held every other Monday from 11am - 1pm at our main site in Sunset Park. Come help us share the gift of reading!
