Our mission is to celebrate the words and idea of young people and to create confident, literate students equipped with a variety of tools for written, verbal and artistic self expression.

Description and/or History:
Our original arts and literacy programs teach and encourage children through collaboration with grown-ups. We believe that these collaborative programs:

  • improve the relevancy and effectiveness of classroom and extracurricular learning
  • create confident children who carry their ability to express themselves into adulthood
  • build strong communities that celebrate the value of young voices from diverse backgrounds

Kids loan us their written work - anything from comic books to novellas to a couple of short sentences--and we turn those stories into a play with puppets and costume and professional actors. We invite kids to see what they've written become big, noisy and real and we watch, as one after another, these kids begin to call themselves writers.

The Striking Viking Story Pirates was founded in 2003 by a group of recent Northwestern graduates who were saddened by the discrepancy between the arts rich environment of our childhoods and the situations we saw in many under resourced New York City public schools. Factors from budget cuts to overworked staff meant that when it came to the arts, some students simply went without. That meant they also went without experiencing the importance and the excitement of creative expression. It didn't seem fair.

Our solution was to show kids across New York City that their ideas, their words and their stories were important.
