In September 2006, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Job Corps launched an initiative designed to improve students’ preparedness for careers in the high-demand industries of the 21st century.
This new initiative, called STARS (Speakers, Tutors, Achievement, Retention, Success), increases Job Corps students’ academic achievement, career skills attainment, and retention in the program by providing motivational speakers to inspire them, and highly qualified tutors and mentors to assist them with academics, career technical training and personal and social development.
Description and/or History:
Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 through 24 begin a meaningful career and take control of their personal and professional lives. At Job Corps, students enroll to learn a career technical trade, earn a high school diploma or GED, prepare for college, and receive help to begin their professional careers.
To enroll in Job Corps, students must meet the following requirements:
Be 16 through 24 years old
Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident
Meet income requirements
Be ready, willing, and able to participate fully in an educational environment
Funded by Congress, Job Corps has been training young adults for meaningful careers since 1964. Job Corps is committed to offering all students a safe, drug-free environment where they can take advantage of the resources provided.
