Description and/or History:
Inwood Community Services, Inc is a non-profit community-based multi-service organization in the northern-most section of Manhattan. Our services are organized in four categories: counseling, education, youth services, and community mobilization. Our current programs include: Two fully-licensed mental health and substance abuse outpatient counseling clinics; a NYS top-rated English as a Second Official Language Program; several youth and summer programs including three DYCD funded OST afterschool programs, a NYS funded Advantage After-school Program, and two successful summer playstreets; and the UNIDOS Inwood Coalition, a Federally-funded mobilization initiative to reduce youth problem behaviors in the community at large.
In 1979 a group of community residents approached a local pastor and organized a committee to address the growing problems of youth delinquency in the neighborhood. Together they created an afterschool program that went on to become incorporated two years later as the non-profit, Inwood Community Services, Inc. We have grown considerably since our first $20,000 youth counseling grant over the years to include youth tutoring, adult counseling, and eventually our first licensed alcoholism clinic. Today we are a $4 million agency with a proud reputation of providing quality professional services with friendly and bi-lingual staff many of whom are from the community we serve which helps to create a home-grown, grassroots and familiar quality to the services we provide.
