Organization Details:
Groundworkâs mission is to support young people living in high poverty urban communities as they develop their strengths, skills, talents and competencies through effective experiential learning and work programs.
Description and/or History:
Our program specifically targets the community surrounding PS 260. (Breukelen) We provide a number of programs, activities, and events geared towards increasing productivity and strengthening social networks within the community as well as bringing awareness to and dealing with the pressing issues and topics affecting the community. We focus on the children, but through the children we can get the entire community involved in positive work. We concentrate on enrichment through activities such as horseback riding, camping, skiing, panel discussions, school exchanges, college campus tours, and many others. We also have many activities on campus that volunteers play a crucial part in such as a haunted fun house, actors for our film and media class, facilitators for sports fun days, group discussion leaders, and things as simple as reading with a second grader for our Y.E.T. reading program. No matter what you choose to volunteer for no one leaves without being richer for the experience. And that's people on both sides.
In 2002, Richard Buery and Andrea Schorr co-founded Groundwork, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping young people living in high poverty urban communities develop their strengths, skills, talents, and competencies through effective experiential learning and work programs.
Groundwork works primarily in and around three public housing projects in East New York. In each of those communities, Groundwork tries to develop a series of programs that can support a critical mass of children and families in those developments so that not only can it impact those young people directly, but hopefully, it can have an impact on the neighborhood.
