The mission of Spence-Chapin is to provide adoption and adoption-related services of the highest quality.

Description and/or History:
Spence-Chapin Services to Families and Children is a nonprofit, nonsectarian agency that focuses on finding adoptive homes for infants and young children who need families, promoting the understanding of adoption through counseling and public education, and improving adoption's image and practice.
Spence-Chapin has provided professional quality adoption services for more than 100 years. The agency traces its origins back to the early 1900s and the pioneering work of Clara Spence and Dr. and Mrs. Henry Chapin, who independently established nurseries out of concern for homeless infants left in hospitals and shelters. They subsequently found these infants permanent adoptive homes. The Spence and Chapin nurseries broke new ground in developing social work techniques for adoption and in introducing the best practices of adoption to the public. In 1943, the nurseries joined to form Spence-Chapin. As Spence-Chapin, the agency became known as a leader in providing adoption services of the highest quality.
