Hudson Riverkeeper
The Hudson Riverkeeper’s mission is to protect the ecological integrity of the Hudson River and its tributaries, and to safeguard the drinking water supply of New York City and the lower Hudson Valley. Riverkeeper believes in the right of every citizen to enjoy and defend our nation's water resources
Description and/or History:
The Hudson Riverkeeper, Inc. is a member-supported not-for-profit environmental organization whose mission is to protect the ecological, commercial and recreational integrity of the Hudson River and its tributaries, and to safeguard the upstate watersheds that supply drinking water to more than nine million New York City and Hudson Valley residents. Through litigation and a community watchdog program, we rectify pollution issues along the Hudson and in NYC's watersheds by first informing polluters of their wrongful actions and bringing them to the courts if they do not remedy the situation independently. We aim to educate communities and potential polluters on how to be better stewards of their River and watersheds through our outreach efforts, providing information on the issues being faced, what Riverkeeper is doing to counteract them, and what can be done on the individual level to have an effect.
Founded in 1966 as the Hudson River Fishermen’s Association, a small group of activists determined to reverse the decline of the Hudson, Hudson Riverkeeper has grown to become the river’s most visible and effective advocate, as well as a leader in protecting the New York City water supply. Some of our earliest accomplishments include playing a leading role in the passing of the Clean Water Act in 1972 in addition to protecting Storm King mountain from development into a Consolidated Edison hyrdoelectrical facility. Our 5,000 members – urban, suburban, and rural residents; fishermen; trades people and professionals – reflect the great diversity of the Hudson River Valley and the New York metropolitan area which depend on Riverkeeper to protect their most crucial local water resources.
