Healthy Media Choices

Healthy Media Choices conducts education workshops for parents and teachers of children ages zero to eight years about how to foresee and stem the effects of media on children. We stress critical thinking skills for the adults and age appropriate media literacy for children. We encourage family and community stories as antidotes to that of the popular culture.

We stress that there is no "one size fits all" response to the question of media in the home. We offer a process to help individual families come to their own decisions from their own value system. This involves a personal evaluation, examination of research about health effects on children of media consumption and an assets-based approach to the family's communication around how they spend time together.

The radio program "The Healthy Media Choices Hour" expands our base and gives the opportunity to challenge the industry and come to a deeper understanding of the research.

Description and/or History:
The founder and one part time staff person are supplemented by volunteers and interns. We are based in Brooklyn Heights, NY and Brattleboro, VT.

In addition to the main work of the organization with schools, parent groups and at conferences, the founder has a weekly radio program out of Brattleboro "The Healthy Media Choices Hour"
The non-profit grew out of work with young children and their families at Ariadne's Thread, a preschool-aged program in Brooklyn. In 2002, formal workshops and filing for non-profit status began. In 2006, a second location and registration in VT was opened. We have given workshops at Head Start Centers, national teachers conferences, private and public schools, homeless shelters and small parent groups.
