Organization Details:
The Brooklyn Children's Museum enriches children's lives by inspiring, involving and challenging them to learn about themselves, others, and the world around them. The Museum is a leader among cultural institutions, recognized for innovation in addressing the educational, cultural and social concerns of youth and families in our diverse and dynamic urban environment.
Description and/or History:
Founded in 1899, the Brooklyn Children's Museum was the world's first museum designed expressly for children. It was created explicitly to introduce children to the world around them through hands-on programs, active exploration of exhibits, specimens from the natural world, and cultural artifacts from all six continents. The museum reopened in September 2008 after completing a $49 million facility expansion and renovation that doubles its size and capacity. The "new" Brooklyn Children's Museum includes all new exhibitions, expanded programs and visitor amenities, and is slated to be the first LEED certified "green" museum in New York City.
Brooklyn Children's Museum is the World's First Museum for Kids. The museum opened its doors on December 16, 1899. One of less than ten children's museums nationally--and the only one in New York State--to have achieved accreditation by the American Association of Museums.
