Gloria Wise Community Center

Our after-school and nursery programs reflect the agency’s mission, which is to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

Description and/or History:
Our after-school program operates daily from 2pm-7pm offering homework guidance and small group literacy-based activities. During school holidays, breaks, ½ days and the summer, we offer cultural, recreational and educational trips. Our nursery services children ages 2.9-5.9yrs old. Our hours of operation for the nursery children are 7am-7pm. Throughout the day breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner are offered to all the children at the center during those hours.
Gloria Wise Community Center (GWCC), was founded by Gloria Wise and a group of volunteer parents who wanted to create better educational and recreational opportunities for the youth of Co-op City. Their efforts were met with unimaginable success. By the time the first generation of GWCC youth reached adulthood, the agency had become one of the largest providers of youth services in the nation.
Unfortunately, the growth was accompanied by great vulnerability. Having grown up as a grassroots organization, GWCC was not adequately regulated by internal controls. Thus, corrupt executives were able to defraud both the the Co-op City community and the agency they purported to lead. The agency was subject to an intense investigation and the public was left wondering who to trust.
Having weathered a turbulent period, GWCC under new leadership and with strong support from parents and community leaders elected to march forward and renew its committment to the youth of Co-op City. The agency has complied with the rehabilitation plan set forth by the Office of the Attorney General and is currently operating child care services to children ages 2.9 - 12 yrs. old.
