]We are a nonprofit organization with the goals of increasing benefits for low-income and unemployed people and empowering community members by training them to refer their peers to these benefits.
Description and/or History:
We compile resource notebooks containing benefit information. We recruit volunteers, many of whom are peers of those we serve. We set up sites where poor/ unemployed people gather. Volunteers work regularly at their sites, talking to customers, screening them for benefits, giving them information, and doing follow-ups, etc. We train volunteers on the screening process, specific benefits, and effective client interaction. In addition to on-site work, we disseminate benefit information to various NYC social service organizations, which include: FEGS, Housing Works, Metropolitan Hospital, St. Francis Friends of the Poor, South Beach Psychiatric Institute, and Bronx Aids Council.
