Millennium High School

Organization Details:

Millennium High School

Millennium High School provides a rigorous liberal arts
academic program. MHS prepares graduates for a college of choice and empowers students through the setting and reaching of goals. Most Millennium graduates go on to
competitive four year colleges and universities. MHS is actively recruiting volunteer mentors to work with high school students at our beautiful facility. There are numerous opportunities to become involved, and we are open to your proposals as well. Mentors can earn community service credit while gaining the satisfaction of helping a teen. Thank you for interest. We look forward to working with you.

Description and/or History:
Millennium HS was founded in 2002 with a $500,000 grant from New Visions for Public Schools. Lower Manhattan's Community Board 1 raised $14 million to build the school, which is located on the 11th,12th and 13th floors of 75 Broad Street. MHS enrolls approximately 550 students. Teachers are available every day after school for extra help. An active Parents Association
initiates programs and raises funds to support them.

MHS volunteer mentors are screened by the MHS External Affairs Committee(extaffairs@millenniumhs.org) and receive a one-hour training prior to starting. Each mentor is paired with a faculty member who serves as a coordinator and advisor, and is matched with a student or group of students. Sample mentoring opportunities are: After-School Tutoring and Clubs, Oct.2009-May2010
1-2 times a week 3:00-5:30pm in all subject areas, dance, art, music, chess, anime, sports and Model UN.

MHS has been in collaboration with The Chinatown YMCA
to provide programs and services on an individual, group and school wide basis emphasizing academic/career success, leadership development, healthy lifestyles, creative expression, and civic engagement/social responsibility. Millennium supports four PSAL sports
teams:soccer, fencing, basketball and baseball. The school newspaper is The Pheonix. There are two dance teams, a girls choir, a film club, School of Rock and
drama club. Millennium has a very active Student Government and exemplary College Office. Mentors are
important to ALL of these activities.
