Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City(NHSNYC) envisions a city of healthy, sustainable and affordable communities. Programming is guided by our mission to “revitalize underserved neighborhoods by creating and preserving affordable housing and providing opportunities for homeownership education, financial assistance and community leadership. Working in partnership with government and business, we are led by local residents and guided by local needs.”
For Nearly three decades, NHSNYC continues to encourage and support neighborhood self-reliance, create, preserve, and promotes affordable housing in New York City. We are the largest multi-service, multi-site housing education and counseling organization in NYC, and The NHS Homeownership Promotion and Preservation Programs all help NHS achieve its mission and goals in underserved neighborhoods throughout New York City.
Description and/or History:
Established in 1982, Neighborhood Housing Service(NHS),is a trusted not-for-profit organization, which has provided New Yorkers with the affordable loans and education they need to buy improve and keep their homes. Our neighborhood offices, located in all five boroughs, collaborate with corporations and government to help an average of 16,000 people each year. In our ongoing effort to build strong communities, we are led by local residents and guided by local needs.
We promote homeownership through: affordable mortgages for first-time home buyers; down payment and closing cost loans; refinancing; education; insurance services; and reverse mortgages for seniors. We provide loans for emergency repairs and other home renovations, large and small. We also offer home maintenance and landlord training, foreclosure prevention, financial fitness counseling and other services. Our Construction Services Department helps customers manage repairs and renovations, and improve the energy efficiency of their homes. Our Housing Development division builds new homes and renovates others to sell at affordable prices. Our neighborhood offices strengthen their communities with activities ranging from community gardens to anti-predatory lending campaigns.
NHS is part of the NeighborWorks America® network, a national not-for-profit network of more than 230 organizations across the country. In 2008, NHS, along with its corporate and government partners, invested more in our community than any other NeighborWorks America ® organization in the United States.
