Logo Chelsea Opera

Chelsea Opera provides opportunities for both seasoned and emerging artists to advance their craft in a professional setting with chamber orchestra in New York City. Modest in scale yet offering high performance values, the company operates in an intimate performing space in a landmark church in Chelsea. Its productions of fully staged operas are engaging, affordable and accessible to a broad spectrum of the community. Intensely interested in attracting first-time audiences, the company is committed to creating pre-performance programs and activities for adults, and structured educational outreach programs coupled with live performances for New York City school children.

Description and/or History:
Chelsea Opera was launched in 2004 on a shoe-string budget. The founders had recognized the need for more performing opportunities in the city. The production’s success launched what has become one of the country’s outstanding “small” opera companies, with nine fully staged productions.

In this short time, the company has earned favorable reviews from Opera News and The New York Times which most recently noted that “The company presents fully professional productions with committed singers and a proper orchestra.”

Rehearsals and some concerts are held at The New York New Church and opera productions are presented at St. Peter's Church in Chelsea.
