ARROW

ARROW (Astoria Residents Reclaiming Our World)is a grassroots environmental organization that works to support recycling, parks and green spaces in western Queens.

Description and/or History:
ARROW was founded in 1990 by a group of neighbors who organized a curbside recycling pickup at a time when New york City did not provide residential recycling. In 1995 ARROW started a community garden which later became a New York City park. With the assistance of Partnerships for Parks funding was secured from the Queens Borough president to renovate a derelict building on the site which is now a community center staffed by NYC Dept of Parks and Recreation. ARROW's mission is to support the work of the Community Center as well as local parks groups such as the Astoria Park Alliance. ARROW also works to support environmental projects such as the establishment of a Queens Greenway and the expansion of recycling facilities in local parks.
