Pajama Program
The Pajama Program provides new pajamas and new books to children in need, many whom are waiting and hoping to be adopted. Thousands of the children we serve live in group homes and shelters and are shuffled often between temporary living facilities. Many of them have been abused or abandoned and have never enjoyed the simple comfort of having a mother or father tuck them in at bedtime and read to them.
Description and/or History:
Pajama Program was founded in 2001 and our programs and services have grown exponentially in nearly nine years. Since 2001 we have provided more than 700,000 pajamas and books to children in need nationwide. Our segment on The Oprah Winfrey Show, which aired twice in 2007, and again in August of 2008, helped us grow to 73 chapters nationwide! In our brief history, we have built partnerships with local community groups including: schools, scout troops, churches, offices, country clubs and social clubs. These groups organize pajama drives and fund-raising events. There are also companies that contribute pajamas for distribution to children and a strong group of volunteer readers who collectively contribute over 540 volunteer hours per year. Pajama Program identifies local institutions where underprivileged children and adolescents are living temporarily. Then,in conjunction with the facility, the Pajama Program sends sleepwear and books. We are contributing to a warmer, more loving and supportive environment for these special children through this program.
