The United Hindu Cultural Council (UHCC)of USA, North America Inc., is dedicated to promoting unity among all people in our diversified populations. The UHCC is seeking to develop humanitarian and caring communities that will address the needs of all individuals, particularly in underserved areas.
The UHCC’s mission includes creating a caring and sharing conscientiousness that promotes quality family life and provides support systems to those who are underserved in our community. In striving to attain this mission, the UHCC will reach out to the poor, aged, isolated, sick and disabled and enhance their ability to survive successfully in our society. We will provide these services regardless of race, creed, disability, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, place of residence, citizen status, economic status, or religion.
Description and/or History:
The United Hindu Cultural Council (UHCC) Senior Center was founded in the living room of its Founder, Chan Jamoona, and has grown tremendously in the past ten years, to over 1,000 registered seniors. Its current location is in South Ozone Park.
The UHCC is a non-profit organization that strives to meet the various socio-economic needs of the growing immigrant populations, including those of the Caribbean and South Asian descent from such communities as Richmond Hill, South Ozone Park, Woodhaven, Hollis, Jamaica, St. Albans, and every borough of New York City.
The UHCC is committed to promoting unity among all religious institutions, community-based organizations, and businesses in Queens, and it has been involved in organizing a number of health related, social, and cultural events that have been well received by the community.
Accomplishments
Because our seniors’ health is very vulnerable, we have established a holistic approach to address the issues of the body, mind, and soul.
Our activities are heavily biased towards wellness programs and include the following:
(1)Walking Club
(2) Cancer Prevention Education
(3) Blood Sugar and Cholesterol screening
(4) Yoga, Meditation, and Relaxation with Stress Management.
(5) Music, Singing, and Dancing.
(6) Poetry, Hindi, Voter Registration, and other activities.
(7) Crime Prevention and Safety
(8) The only city-funded vegetarian program in NYC.
All of our activities and programs are free of charge.
