]After Hours Project (AHP) is a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit organization whose mission is provide injecting drug users, sex workers and the homeless with safe injection equipment and educate them on current information on HIV/AIDS, TB, hepatitis, overdose prevention, STDs, risk reduction strategies and safer sex practices and connect them to needed services such as health care, housing, shelter, HIV testing, drug treatment and social services.
Description and/or History:
AHP was started when the founders, Fernando Soto, and the Board Chair, Richard Curtis, organized community leaders and residents to provide desperately needed harm reduction services at night. In addition they both made significant donations that allowed their vision to become reality, by renting a site, purchasing furniture & program materials, and making a down-payment on a 15-passenger van that enabled volunteers to serve several sites in a single night.
Among the services that AHP currently provides and which are funded by the NYS/DOHMH AIDS Institute and NYC-DOHMH/MHRA are: intakes and assessments, SEP and ESAP, outreach to injectors and other high-risk drug users, individual and group level interventions, harm reduction counseling, education on safer injection practices, condom and bleach kit demonstration and distribution, supportive services, referrals, client escort and overdose prevention. In addition, AHP currently provides meningitis vaccines through the NYC/DOHMH, overdose prevention and Hepatitis C education and screening.
