Organization Details:
Mount Carmel Worship & Outreach Ctr. is a faith-based, grassroots, non-profit organization. In accordance with our mission, we foster opportunities for ministry by linking community resources with human needs, in order to bridge the gap between economic dependence and individual independence. We seek to empower, encourage, and stimulate creative thought process which impact change. Our outreach program primarily caters to Brooklyn residents. However, all of our programs are open to NYC residents regardless of their race, gender, age, ethnic background, religious affiliation, or physical disability.
Description and/or History:
The Acquisition of Computer Excellence (ACE) program fosters educational and economic development for low-income, unemployed/underemployed, minority, and senior adult/children program participants. The adult educational/workforce development program provides a three-tiered core curriculum with a focus on basic literacy skills (reading, writing, numeracy, listening, speaking), technology education, and employment readiness training. Our literacy program concentration assesses individual student need for training in occupational vocabulary, reading comprehension, math skills, writing, and pronunciation.
We administer the BEST and CASAS standardized tests and provide a group based training to improve key student learning areas. The technology component of the ACE program, trains adults with little or no prior computer skills to master basic/intermediate functions contained in Microsoft Office software programs, and the Internet to conduct job-related searches. The employment readiness component of the ACE program provides students with interview techniques, resume development workshops, and literature/videos to explore workplace communication issues. Our curriculum provides an integrated learning environment which incorporates “real-life” contexts that are responsive to the needs, skills, goals, and interests of our adult learners. We prepare our community members with the skills to support themselves/their families and to develop lifelong learning skills.
