Organization Details:

Gay Men Of African Descent, Inc.

GMAD's mission is to empower gay men of African descent through education, advocacy, health & wellness promotion and social support.

Description and/or History:
Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD) was founded in 1986 by the Reverend Charles Angel, a Pentecostal minister who recognized the need for Black gay men in New York City to join together to provide support to each other in fighting the AIDS epidemic and continued homophobia and racism.

With grant funding from the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the New York City AIDS Fund, GMAD incorporated as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit agency and began delivering HIV prevention services in 1990.

Since then, we have broadened our focus to reach a wider audience, including women, Latinos, and transgendered people, all of whom make up our community. GMAD is a growing organization responding to the needs of a diverse constituency, with a dedicated, professional staff. Today it is one of the largest Black gay organizations in the nation dedicated to the welfare of Black gay men.

We recently expanded, and now provide services in both our Harlem office and our new Brooklyn office, as well as via our mobile outreach until in Manhattan, Brooklyn and The Bronx.
