Description and/or History:
Roosevelt Island Youth Program, Inc is a not for profit organization serving the youth of the community of Roosevelt Island since 1978. We run a youth center featuring a full fitness gym, computer lab, music classes and a gameroom. We also run a Beacon program at PS/IS 217 on the same street serving hundreds of youth from the host school and others. At the Beacon, we offer a structured after school component consisting of homework help, math tutoring, arts & crafts, chess, dance, drumming, organized games, martial arts, wrestling and adult fitness among other activities. The program also organizes the following seasonal leagues and clinics: indoor and outdoor soccer, basketball, baseball and flag football. We offer classes in tennis and swimming as well. The program runs a summer day camp featuring many of the above activities. RIYP sponsors several large community events including Roosevelt Island Day and Halloween parade and carnival.
