Brooklyn Ballet

Brooklyn Ballet is a professional, not-for-profit dance company dedicated to artistic excellence, education, and Brooklyn’s diverse communities. Founded in February 2002 by choreographer and educator Lynn Parkerson, the company brings a contemporary vision to the treasured art form of ballet, with repertory and programs that revitalize and re-imagine the classical form.

Description and/or History:
Brooklyn Ballet presents an annual performance season in Brooklyn and serves the community through educational outreach projects as well as through its professional dance school located in Downtown Brooklyn. In September 2009 Brooklyn Ballet will open it's new home in Schermerhorn House. Our new facility at 160 Schermerhorn Street will allow us to increase programming to better serve our community.

Brooklyn Ballet School offers children’s ballet classes for ages 7-11years. The new school at Schermerhorn House in Downtown Brooklyn will offer conservatory level ballet classes plus a wide array of dance and movement classes for the whole community.

Brooklyn Ballet Company is a professional contemporary ballet
Company which presents an annual Brooklyn Season as well as community based performances. In our new home at Schermerhorn House, Brooklyn Ballet will have regular access to a 100-seat black box theater for main stage productions.

Take Ballet to the Streets is a free site-specific performance series. The program features repertory performed by Brooklyn Ballet, plus works performed by children in the Ballet's educational programs.

Elevate is Brooklyn Ballet's in-school dance program. The 6 week residency begins with a performance by Brooklyn Ballet Company followed by weekly hands-on ballet classes taught by a team of two teachers from Brooklyn Ballet. Brooklyn Ballet currently serves 7 public schools in Brooklyn, ca. 1,000 students, per year.
