Neighborhood Self Help By Older Persons Project

Neighborhood Self Help by Older Persons Project (SHOPP) is a multi-service organization serving older (age 60+)Bronx residents. As a strengths-based social service agency, SHOPP's mission "Helping older adults to help themselves"is based on the philosophy of self help and mutual assistance. We believe that older people are capable of helping themselves and others improve their capacity to deal with the physical, emotional, social and financial challenges they face as they age. Furthermore, we believe that informal social systems of support, such as relationships between family, friends and neighbors, are crucial in providing a buffer against the negative consequences of aging and environmental stressors.

Description and/or History:
Founded in 1980, SHOPP's programs were developed to respond to the unique needs of older people of color and are reflective the cultural diversity of the various Bronx communities we serve. These programs include 1) SHOPP Senior Network Groupwork Program serving groups of seniors in partner sites such as senior housing buildings, churches and community centers; 2) Casa Boricua Senior Center- a full service center serving Latino elders; 3)SHOPP CMP Case Management Program serving homebound elderly; 4) Senior Network Access Program (SNAP) -- providing benefit and entitlement assistance; 5)SHOPP VIP Elder Abuse & Crime Victims Program; 6)Proyecto Salud/Healthy Living Project focusing on wellness and health promotion activities; 7) Transportation Services and 8)SHOPP Lafayette Estates NORC Program sering older residents of a naturally occurring retirement community.
