BEDFORD STUYVESANT FAMILY HEALTH CENTER, INC.
AN OVERVIEW

After close to 30 years of providing quality services to Bedford Stuyvesant and surrounding communities, the Bedford Stuyvesant Family Health Center, Inc. is playing an increasingly important role in Brooklyn?s health care delivery system. A private, nonprofit, state and federally funded community health center, in fall 2009, Bedford Stuyvesant Family Health Center is slated to open a new 38,000 square foot state-of-the-art, ?green,? environmentally friendly health center which is expected to double the number of patient visits within two years. Currently, the Center annually delivers care to more than 16,500 individuals who account for more than 54,000 patient visits yearly. Additionally, the Center provides care at five homeless shelters by a seasoned team of providers. We also operate the Broadway Family Health Center near Bushwick and five school-based health centers. Bedford Stuyvesant Family Health Center delivers services that are culturally competent and linguistically, developmentally and educationally appropriate to clients across the lifecycle. Bedford Stuyvesant Family Health Center has contracts with the New York City Department of Juvenile Justice to provide physical examinations for employees and with New York City Transit Authority to assess eligibility for the Access-A-Ride and reduced fare programs.

The Center meets the need in Brooklyn neighborhoods that have been hard hit by the closure of key health care facilities. In the past five years, Brooklyn?s health care delivery system has been forced to absorb the closing of St. Mary?s Hospital, the Lyndon Baines Johnson Health Complex, and the Bedford Stuyvesant Community Mental Health Center. Additionally, Interfaith Medical Center has downsized its ambulatory care facilities. Bedford Stuyvesant and Bushwick have long been recognized as federally designated Medically Underserved Areas (MUAs), Medically Underserved Populations (MUPs) and Health Professional Shortage Areas (HSPA). Due to the diligent efforts of the President/CEO the Bedford Stuyvesant community was designated a dental professional shortage area with assignment to degree of shortage Group 1, High Need. These and other health indicators make it clear that there are insufficient health care facilities to meet the need of city residents. In fact, according to NYC?s Take Care New York Report, three in ten Bedford Stuyvesant residents did not have a regular doctor or medical home in the years 2003 and 2004.
