Our core mission is to build community and enrich the lives of Western Queens residents by providing caring, quality services to meet their social, health, educational, and recreational needs and thereby strengthen this multicultural community. Our vision is to be a pioneer in the provision of integrated services that address the complex and changing needs of the community.
Description and/or History:
Sunnyside Community Services (SCS) was started in 1974 as a tiny senior center to give older residents a "place to go." Responding to community needs over the years, SCS has grown to become the largest community-based social service agency in Western Queens, now reaching over 18,000 residents who range in age from 5 to 95 (and over).
Our Senior Center has a roster of more than 2,000 members and provides services to many more seniors during the course of a year. Other services for older adults include adult day programs for physically frail seniors and one for seniors with Alzheimer’s and other cognitive impairments.
Our Youth programs started in 1983 with a small after-school program at PS 199 and a Summer-in-the Parks program. Together these programs service about 750 elementary-school children. Today SCS’s programs form a broad continuum of services for about 3,000 children from five to 21 years of age. Summer and school-holiday camps provide a safe, educational environment for elementary and middle-school children and a benefit for their working parents. Our College Readiness Program helps high-school students with college preparation while our GED workshops help young adults complete their high-school education. Both groups benefit from youth employment and job readiness workshops.
