"I Have A Dream" Foundation - NY Metro Area
The mission of the “I Have A Dream” Foundation – New York Metro Area is to empower children and families living in underserved areas of the tri-state region to reach their college and career goals by providing a dynamic, long-term program of mentoring, tutoring, and enrichment with an assured opportunity for higher education.
Description and/or History:
The "I Have A Dream" approach is unique. We sponsor entire grade levels of 50-100 students in under-resourced public schools or housing developments, and work with these "Dreamers" from early elementary school all the way through high school. Upon high school graduation, each Dreamer receives guaranteed tuition assistance for higher education. “I Have A Dream” programs operate year-round. Programming is designed to enhance Dreamers’ academic performance and social skills, and provide Dreamers with new experiences. To achieve this, activities include the following over the life span of the program, as appropriate to the Dreamers’ ages, interests, and needs: Academic programming Summer programming Community service activities Social and cultural enrichment activities Arts programming – visual arts, dance, drama Career awareness and employment Life skills education Health literacy Parental involvement Mentoring College preparation, visits, and application help
