Jan Hus Church Homeless Outreach Program

The Homeless Outreach and Advocacy Program (HOAP) of the Jan Hus Presbyterian Church has a twofold mission of service and advocacy. The Program is part of the Social Justice Ministries program of the congregation and is the only Upper East Side congregation that provides this level of direct services to the poor and homeless populations. The staff of the HOAP also works with affiliated organizations in the area to mobilize and advocate for changes in public policies that affect New York City’s poorest.

Description and/or History:
Each weekday from 10am to 2pm, the HOAP assists more than fifty guests with immediate responses to their physical needs, providing monthly food pantry items, clothing, toiletries, undergarments and food items for those without cooking facilities. We also offer access to computers, phones, fax machines, and photocopiers. We allow clients to use our address for their mail, and we currently receive mail for over 500 people. We have a small storage facility for forty chronically homeless guests. We also host a Tuesday night dinner program that feeds more than 100 guests. During the summer, our dinner is on Fridays evenings. We provide small grants to assist with clients facing eviction or the turning off of utilities, as well as those in need of emergency assistance for vital records, government-issued identification, employment readiness, emergency travel and security payments on apartments.
