America SCORES NY
America SCORES New York is an after-school program combining soccer, poetry and service-learning. It uses these activities and the overarching value of teamwork to combat the dual challenges of child obesity and illiteracy among elementary school students in West Harlem.
Description and/or History:
America SCORES New York is a non-profit, sports-based youth development program based at elementary schools in West Harlem. It is an affiliate of America SCORES, a 10-year-old program with affiliates in 14 cities across the country, combines soccer, poetry and service learning into one five-day-a-week after-school program. We use these activities and the overarching value of teamwork to combat the dual challenges of child obesity and illiteracy among elementary and middle school students in underserved areas. We partner with schools, working with principals, administrators and parents, and our curricula are nationally certified. We hold student poet-athlete poetry slams, a corporate soccer tournament, and other fundraising events throughout the year.
