Community Environmental Center (CEC) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1994 to address the housing concerns of low and middle-income communities while at the same time benefiting the air and earth around them.
NYC Service together with CEC launched NYC Cool Roofs in Fall 2009 to help buildings owners reduce energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions, and local temperatures by coating their roofs white.
Description and/or History:
Since 1994, CEC has grown into the largest not-for-profit energy-conservation organization in New York State, and CEC holds the largest state-issued contract for weatherization assistance services.
Cool Roofs consist of a special coating that is highly reflective, typically white, and releases heat quickly. CEC is participating in the NYC Cool Roofs program because it is a simple and easy way to reduce the local global warming impact, lower the summertime temperature of the entire city by 1 degree, save NYC tenants $100 million, lessen the impact of the Heat Island Effect (because of all the hot dark surfaces in the city like asphalt roads and roofs, New York City is 5-7 degrees hotter than the surrounding rural areas) and the severity of heat-related illnesses among children and the elderly
