Mission
The Word of Life International (WOL) is a multi service community outreach center serving as a last resort for food, clothing and social services for over 8,000 household members in the South Bronx per month.
Vision
Our vision is to ELIMINATE HUNGER in the South Bronx and become a one stop multi service center that simultaneously solve the short term emergency needs of our clients as well as the long term problems that prevent them from living a full and independent life and serve as well as a respected voice for the poor in the community.
Description and/or History:
History
WOL first opened its doors in 2003 in an effort to feed the poor and homeless in the community that surrounded the Word of Life Christian Fellowship International Church with an initially goal of feeding 800 people per month by soliciting donations from its church members. Its focus was to provide emergency food assistance, education, information and referrals in order to combat hunger and help their neighbors access services that would empower them towards self-sufficiency. Over the years, WOL has grown well beyond its initial focus into a multi-service agency that is an important anchor in the community. Now serving the Bronx Community Word Of Life International has become a strong voice and advocate for the South Bronx Community. WOL provides a safety net for those individuals/families that are poor, homeless, sick or elderly and have little or no food to eat. WOL runs a Community Food Pantry that serves a monthly average of 8,000 household members. It also provides among others: Youth Enrichment Program, School Summer Meals, Job Placement and Referral services, Food Stamp Screening, HIV/AIDS Outreach, Women Infant and Children (WIC) referral, Health Insurance Enrollment, Immigration Services, and Cloth Bank.
Goals
Through the dedication and leadership of Pastor John Udo-Okon and his wife Felicia, church members, community leaders and volunteers, WOL has grown to be a major social service agency in the community. WOL is committed to improving the quality of life of the poor and immigrant families in the South Bronx by providing humanitarian, empowerment, youth, health and nutritional services. WOL wants to put in place a program that addresses the need of youth who are at risk and falling behind in life and to support families and empower those youth who are making progress in their lives. WOL objectives are not complex; the organization exists to serve those who daily fall through the cracks of the private and public social welfare system. WOL is the last resort for many clients when they have been turned away from other sources of support or are too frail or confused to make the trip outside their neighborhood.
WOL was incorporated in July 2007 as a public charity in order to effectively partner with both private and government agencies to address the historical problem of hunger and poverty in the South Bronx Community.
