Inner-City Scholarship Fund (ICSF), the city’s leading non-profit organization dedicated to providing tuition assistance for underprivileged students is looking for volunteers. There are many ways to get involved. Each option has a varying time commitment: Junior Committee, Learning to Look, Job Opportunities Program, School Board Advisory Program, Project YESS Leadership Committee, Be A Student’s Friend Advisory Committee, and Lawyer’s Committee. The Inner-City Scholarship Fund supports more than 38,000 students (93% minority and 35% non-Catholic) in 105 inner-city Catholic schools in Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island. 98% percent of ICSF high school seniors graduate and 96% go on to college.

Description and/or History:
Junior Committee: Provides hands-on support to ICSF schools and students by mentoring, offering tutoring, coaching the after school basketball league, taking students on cultural field trips, etc.

Learning to Look: Introduces students in grades 2-5 to the world of art where they learn about composition, narrative, periods and styles and culminates in a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Job Opportunities Program: Provides high school juniors an opportunity to gain experience in a business setting through workshops and summer internships. Volunteers can help students with resume writing, interview skills, and tips on entering the workforce.

School Board Advisory Program: Efforts help schools to increase enrollment and become financially independent. Volunteers provide valuable expertise in marketing, recruiting, financial planning, capital improvements and fundraising.

Project YESS Leadership Committee: Raises and administers grant awards to ICSF elementary schools in need of capital improvement and repairs to provide a safe and nurturing environment for students.

Be A Student’s Friend Advisory Committee: Volunteers provide expertise in marketing and development to generate interest in new scholarships to the program. It currently matches over 1,700 inner-city students with sponsors who provide the tuition assistance they need to attend Catholic school.

Lawyer’s Committee: Lawyers from top firms host an annual Lawyer’s Luncheon to support ICSF’s programs.
