Organization Details:
[View Volunteer Opportunities
]To provide help to self directing disabled adults so that they can be as independent as possible. For example, if a blind person has to fill out forms, we will provide them with a volunteer who can assist them with that task. We also help disabled adults with emergency situations such as if a blind person's guide dog becomes ill, we will give them a volunteer escort to assist them in getting around. We also provide referrals to other agencies and assist disabled persons in getting to these agencies and doing the required paper work.
Description and/or History:
Our goal is to provide disabled persons with personal help through the use of volunteers. For example, we provide readers for the blind, help with shopping and escorts for doctors appointments or personal trips. We also have a once a month social event in which volunteers can help by serving food or coming on a trip to assist a disabled person. We also allow disabled persons to have a volunteer if they want to go on a personal trip for the day. For example, a trip to Atlantic City, etc.
We began in 1982 and at that time we just provided a social event once a month. Now we have expanded our services to provide disabled persons help in their homes. We are still having our once a month event as we started but we realized that disabled people need more than just recreation and that is why we have added these services to our organization. We also do our own fund raising events and could use help from volunteers.

Overall Experience

It is a rewarding experience.

Helping Hands for the Disabled of NYC has a group of exciting people. The people I have worked with are blind. They are a warm, friendly and humorous crowd. My experience has been a pleasant one. The events they prepare are full of entertainment and good food. What I have gained by this experience is that we need each other to survive in this world. NY can be a hard place to live in, but there are warm kind people that reside here. Assisting the blind has been a privilege. More people should join. Alice is wonderful and sets up volunteer opportunities according to your schedule.
