]The ultimate aim of the Alzheimer's Association is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease. Our immediate mission is to create and promote comprehensive care and support for persons with the disease, their families, and caregivers.
Description and/or History:
The Alzheimer's Association, NYC Chapter seeks to build the capacity of individuals and institutions to respond with compassion, care, and competence to the needs of those affected by Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Staff and volunteers achieve this by providing a variety of programs, services, and information to persons with the disease, their families and caregivers. Programs and services include:
- A 24 Hour Helpline - provides access to information, advice and support to those affected directly or indirectly by Alzheimer's disease.
- Family Support Groups throughout New York City - to share experiences and exchange information.
- Free Educational Programs and a Speakers Bureau - relevant topics are discussed at the Alzheimer's Association office and at various agencies throughout the 5 boroughs (senior centers, health fairs, libraries, corporations, places of worship, schools, etc.) Topics include: understanding dementia, financial planning, care strategies, research programs, and legislative and public issues.
- MedicAlert+Alzheimer's Association Safe Return program - a nationwide identification, support and enrollment program working at the community level - provides assistance to people with Alzheimer's disease who become lost locally or far from home.
