Logo American Lung Association In New York

Prevent lung disease and promote lung health.

Description and/or History:
The American Lung Association in New York works tirelessly at city, state and federal levels to advocate for tobacco control, clean air and improved funding for lung disease education and research. The Association offers the Open Airways For Schools program and Asthma Camp Experience to provide people with the skills necessary to understand and overcome asthma- the most prevalent form of lung disease in New York City affecting more than one million residents and 300,000 children. To help fight nicotine addiction and tobacco-related illness, the Association offers the Not-On-Tobacco teen cessation program, Freedom From Smoking adult cessation program and assistance to local organizations with tobacco prevention. The State Of The Air Report grades every county for ground-level ozone air pollution and particulate matter that puts millions of New York City residents at risk for respiratory complications.
For more than 100 years, the American Lung Association in New York has served as the premier community resource on all areas of pulmonary health. As the oldest non-profit voluntary health organization in the nation, the Association is guided by its mission statement- to prevent lung disease and promote lung health. Organized in 1902 for the sole purpose of combating tuberculosis, the Association has demonstrated its ability to respond to the changing needs of the public by expanding its programs to incorporate all lung disease and related issues, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, tobacco control, environmental health, tuberculosis control and research into the causes and cures of respiratory illness.
