Friends of Hudson River Park
Friends of Hudson River Park is the only community-based organization dedicated exclusively to the entire Hudson River Park. Celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2009, Friends represents thousands of organizations and individuals who share its mission of creating and preserving this world-class park for everyone, that, when completed, will provide a great urban waterfront running from 59th Street south to the Battery.
Description and/or History:
When completed, Hudson River Park will extend for five miles along Manhattan’s West Side waterfront. Four distinct neighborhoods define the Park, and we invite you to discover them all--the expansive lawns of Clinton; the superb athletic facilities and historic landmarks of Chelsea; the restored piers of Greenwich Village; and the spectacular horticultural walkways of Tribeca – with much more to come. In addition to building support for Hudson River Park, Friends offers a number of free and low-cost public programs including boat rides, music series and community festivals.
Friends of Hudson River Park was incorporated in 1999 after the creation of the Hudson River Park Act in 1998, a piece of legislation that designated the land and water for the future Hudson River Park, as well as dictating park usage and leadership. Friends currently has 6 full time employees, and a number of interns from the High School for Environmental Studies.
