Our mission is to provide competent culturally sensitive quality care to our patients with dignity and compassion regardless of ethnicity, nationality, religion or ability to pay in a safe environment.

Metropolitan Hospital Center is a patient centered acute care facility, in support of primary care initiatives.

Description and/or History:
Metropolitan Hospital Center established in 1875 on Wards Island,is one of the nation's oldest public hospitals and has been the primary provider of health care and preventive medicine in East Harlem and the surrounding communities. We treat our patients without regard to their ability to pay. The hospital is affiliated with New York Medical College, specializing in family focused health programs, Family Centered Asthma Program, Women's and Children's Care Centers, a new state of the art Labor and Delivery Suite, Family Planning, Child Development, and Pediatric Primary Care.
Metropolitan has been affiliated with New York Medical College since 1875, and is a designated university hospital. This oldest American partnership between a hospital and a private medical school brings many benefits. Because all attending physicians also teach, and some do research, they keep current on new developments in medical science.
