Mercy Center is a community center for women and their families located in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx. In fulfilling its mission, Mercy Center currently offers the following programs:

Parenting and Family Life Skills

Family Alternatives to Violence seeks to break the cycle of violence in family interactions and provide the skills that lead to healthy family interactions.

Parenting Courses, Family Weekends, and mentoring relationships are complemented by other programmatic initiatives.

Anger Management is a 12-week course designed to improve anger awareness and provide skills and techniques for appropriate expressions of anger.

Family Activities and Weekends - Family Weekends offer families the opportunity to spend a weekend together in upstate New York, participate in family workshops and enjoy recreational opportunities together and in community with other families.

Business and Job Skills
Employment - Yes! aims to enhance the job readiness of women in the area we serve by assisting them in obtaining meaningful employment and supporting their ongoing success. It includes computer training, office skills, entrepreneurial basics, self-esteem building, resume writing and interviewing practice.

Youth Programs and Activities

CHAMPIONS (Children Have A Major Place In Our Neighborhood Services) is a series of programs for the children of Mercy Center’s families, presenting them with alternatives to the violence and negativity to which they are often subjected. These activities address the needs of children for a safe environment and provide an opportunity to advance their creative and educational potential through individual assistance

Social Services, Case Management

Social Services and Case Management Services are provided for women and men participating in Mercy Center programs who do not receive these services

Personal Development

Personal Development opportunities include various support groups, dance and exercise classes, guidance in personal goal setting and achievement, spirituality support sessions in English and in Spanish, and comprehensive personal assistance, and other events and workshops.

Its mission is to provide educational, technical, human and supportive services to women, parents and other family members, empowering them to reach their full human potential, lead meaningful lives, and be agents of change in their families and communities.
For more than a decade Mercy Center has intervened in the lives of women and their families and helped them move from isolation to connectedness, poverty to economic self-sufficiency, despair to hopefulness, and violent and oppressive family dynamics to healthy, respectful and mutually enriching relationships.
Mercy Center was founded in 1990 in response to the needs of parents living in its inner city neighborhood. It was originally established as a counseling and support center to help women deal with stresses in their lives and offer them a chance to grow towards reaching their full potential. It soon developed parenting classes, mentoring opportunities, and women’s support groups to help parents meet the challenges they were facing. In subsequent years, more programs were added in response to the articulated needs of the women and families it came to serve.
