Bailey's Cafe is a center for educational and cultural activity. We believe in nurturing and guiding individuals in their pursuit of self-knowledge through writing, cooking,music, dance, and fine arts. We aim to create an atmosphere of collective awareness, respect and responsibility, built on the talents and resources of the community.

Description and/or History:
Bailey's Cafe is a place of conversation, artistic expression, the preparation and sharing of food. Together, the young and the old gather to learn from each other, to discover themselves, to transform and to celebrate while energizing the community with warmth, culture, and fun. For years, founder Stefanie Siegel has dreamt about Bailey's Cafe, about a welcoming place where a variety of people create an environment of joy and discovery. The spirit of Bailey's Cafe is one of individuals being together. Stefanie, a teacher, activist and chef, has visualized and developed events and adventures that have inspired an energized all who have become a part of the Bailey's community.
Beginning in the fall of 2002, Bailey's Cafe has piloted events in the contiguous Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights. In addition to building a sense of connection among those involved, these events have helped to guage the needs and interests of the community. Among our successes:
Garden Gathering at Hattie Carthan Community Garden--ongoing since Fall 2002, community comes together to work in the garden, hold workshops on preparation of healthy food, prepare and share food together and share creative expression-music, dance, poetry, etc.
Mural Painting at Albany Senior Center--an intergenerational project involving elders from the Center and youth from Paul Robeson High School. This work has continued and is now an Oral History Project, which began last January and continued through the summer 2006 and is growing into a performance piece to be performed in February 2007.
Collaborative Work with Paul Robeson High School--compilation CD of students' and staffs' original beats and lyrics. A second CD will be release this winter.
