Organization Details:
To provide a range of services that complement the New York City education system so that children, regardless of home language, have equal access to quality higher education.
Description and/or History:
We are located in Jackson Heights, Queens which has a large population of 1st & 2nd generation Americans. Our goal is to complement the public education system to create greater opportunities for achievement for local children, including many who do not speak English at home. Our school currently provides 3 year old preschool; 4 year old universal pre-kindergarten; after school homework assistance, and a summer school program. We have just completed a study course to assist local 8th and 9th grade students who are taking the entrance exams for specialized high schools in NYC. Our vision for the near future is to add more opportunities for older students to participate and to build a play structure ("The Learning Park") for our school age students to enjoy.
Community United Methodist Church has been a cornerstone in the Jackson Heights community since the 1920's. The church has provided worship in up to 4 different languages. The church leaders saw a need for educational opportunities in the community, and began providing preschool and summer school services in the early 1980's. 82nd Street Academics incorporated separately from the church in 2002, and has added the Universal Pre-K program and the After School Achievement Club to expand the services we provide.
