Organization Details:

Lutheran Medical Center

Lutheran HealthCare has no reason for being of its own; it exists only to serve the needs of its neighbors. Service to the community is our mission. We define health as the total well-being of the community and its residents and understand a hospital not as a collection of buildings, machines and beds, but a staff of talented, creative and committed people who serve the community as they are needed.

Description and/or History:
Lutheran Medical Center, a 476 bed hospital, is a major teaching affiliate of the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, a clinical campus for primary care education. Lutheran is an acute general community hospital bringing the benefits of scientific research and academic medicine to the communities of Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Park Slope, Dyker Heights and the adjacent areas of southwest Brooklyn. Lutheran is a Level 1 Trauma Center, has a cutting edge 30 bed rehab unit, is a member of the Lenox Hill Hospital Cardiac Network and brings a wide range of health care services to the ethnically and economically diverse populations of southwest Brooklyn.

Lutheran Family Health Centers are part of Lutheran HealthCare and include 10 neighborhood primary care sites providing more than 600,000 medical and dental visits annually.

Lutheran Medical Center was founded in 1883 by a Norwegian Lutheran Deaconess-Nurse, Sister Elizabeth Fedde, to serve the Norwegian immigrant community. The institution has provided care for the southwest Brooklyn communities and for 80 years grew and declined with other neighborhood institutions on the Brooklyn waterfront. In recent decades Lutheran Medical Center aggressively volunteered to be the corporate stimulus for community renewal, the catalyst for constructive change, and the advocate for the health and well-being of this entire urban area.
