The Mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Brooklyn and Queens is to make a positive difference in the lives of young people living in Brooklyn and Queens through a professionally supported one-to-one relationship with a committed and caring adult volunteer. The Vision of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Brooklyn and Queens is to provide positive mentoring relationships for all young people living in Brooklyn and Queens who need and want them.
Description and/or History:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Brooklyn and Queens is a mentoring program of Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens that provides volunteer mentors (BIGS) for youth (LITTLES) through the following programs: Community-Based Mentoring Program - BIGS are over 18 and mentor a child between the ages of 8 and 14 in the community. Mentoring Children of Promise Program - BIGS are over 21 and mentor a child of incarcerated parents in the community. School-Based Mentoring Program - BIGS are either high school students or adults and mentor elementary or middle school students at their school.
Catholic Charities operates 180 social service programs in the NYC Boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens dates back to 1934, when "Big Brother Visitors" were assigned to young boys coming before the court. In April of 1995, the program was expanded to include Big Sisters and Little Sisters. In June of 1998, the program became an official affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
