Reduce the barriers faced by Brooklyn victims of domestic violence who are seeking help.

Description and/or History:
The Family Justice Center serves as one-stop- center for domestic violence victims, by co-locating service providers in one building, so that victims need only go to one office to have their multiple needs met. Victims of domestic violence are typically resolving multiple service needs simultaneously, such as housing, public assistance, criminal justice issues, and counseling. The New York City Family Justice Center ("FJC")provides legal, social,faith-based, and language interpretation services in one centrally located building. The Kings County District Attorney's Office is the primary partner with OCDV on this initiative, and has co-located its entire staff of Assistant District Attorneys, counseling unit, and support staff to the new site. A total of 151 individuals work at the location, coming from 5 City agencies, 13 community groups, 6 religious organizations, and 5 universities. In November 2001, New York City residents voted to amend the City Charter to establish a permanent office that would comprehensively address issues of domestic violence. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg appointed Yolanda B. Jimenez as the first commissioner to head the new office, which is one of only a few government offices in the United States focused solely on the issue of domestic violence.

In July, 2004, the Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence ("OCDV") and the Kings County District Attorney's Office ("KCDA") were awarded a grant by the Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women, to launch a Family Justice Center in downtown Brooklyn.
